What to Expect
Highlights Along the Route
Strathpeffer & the Highlands Interior
Travelling through the heart of the Highlands, we pass through traditional villages and sweeping moorland landscapes while learning about the region’s geology, clan history, and the importance of the old drove roads that once connected these remote communities.
Loch Maree – One of Scotland’s Most Beautiful Lochs
Few places capture the spirit of the Highlands like Loch Maree. Surrounded by ancient Caledonian pinewoods and rugged mountains, the loch is famous for its many wooded islands, rich wildlife, and centuries-old legends. Stops along the shore offer superb opportunities for photography and quiet appreciation of the landscape.
Gairloch & Wester Ross Coast
As we reach the coast at Gairloch, the scenery opens to dramatic views across the Minch towards the Isle of Skye and the Outer Hebrides. This historic fishing and crofting area is known for its white sandy beaches, maritime heritage, and stories of Highland life on the edge of the Atlantic.
Destination: Inverasdale
Our journey continues north along the coastline to the peaceful crofting township of Inverasdale. Here we visit the welcoming The Old School House Tearoom, a charming community hub set within a former village school.
Inside you’ll find:
A cosy tearoom serving homemade cakes, soups, and traditional Highland baking
A fascinating local history collection sharing stories of the crofting communities of the area
A second-hand book and gift shop supporting the local community
A warm Highland welcome and a chance to slow down and enjoy life in one of Scotland’s most remote and beautiful regions
Arctic Convoy History
Nearby lies an important but little-known chapter of wartime history. During the Second World War, this coastline played a role in supporting the Arctic convoys that sailed from Britain to northern Russia through some of the most dangerous seas of the war. Remnants and memorial sites in the area help tell the story of the sailors and airmen who undertook these perilous missions supplying the Soviet Union.
Your guide will share the history of these convoys and the role the Wester Ross coast played in this remarkable story of courage and endurance.
A Journey Through Wild Highland History
This tour combines spectacular landscapes, quiet coastal communities, and fascinating history—offering a deeper look at the Highlands beyond the usual routes. From ancient lochs and mountains to wartime stories and welcoming local cafés, it’s a journey that captures the true character of Wester Ross.
